Introduction

Manaslu the eighth higest mountain in the world is more challenging and varied than Cho Oyo. It is situated on the edge of the Kali Gandaki Valley the most secluded Himalayan valley in the central-western Nepal some 40 miles east of Annapurna.Manaslu’s long ridges and valley glaciers provide a number of approaches from all directions culminating in a peak that towers steeply above its surrounding landscape. There are six different routes to the summit that have been mapped in the past and the south face is by far the toughest.

The first attempt on Manaslu failed it was made in 1953 by a Japanese team who attempted the peak from the Budhi Gandaki Valley. The first asscent was made only in 1956 by another Japanese team. If Everest is known as the mountain of the British the Japanese have in some ways taken charge on Manaslu with all three summits peaks on Manaslu initially climbed by Japanese expeditions.

The climbing route is relatively straightforward to the summit there are few technical sections. Four camps are set up along the way there are a few stretches of steep climbing and crevasses from Camp I to Camp II. There may be slippery snow climbing required from Camp II to Camp III and there is a possibility of avalanches from Camp III to Camp IV.
