This trek is the reverse of the previous Helambu trek mantioned on this web site and what we mention here is the extension trail if you are planning to trek back to Kathmandu via Helambu rather than exit the Langtang Valley at Dunche.
We trek out of the valley and travel on though a beautiful wood to Sing Ghompa. From here we travel on to The Sacred Lakes of Gosainkunda a very holy pilgrimage site for Hindus. The trail is quite rugged at times and seems to go on forever before reaching Gosainkunda.
There are about a dozen lakes in the Gosainkunda Basin, the main three being Saraswatikunda, Bhairabkunda, and Gosainkunda. According to legend, Shiva created Gosainkunda when he pierced a glacier with his trident to obtain water to quench his thirst after having swallowed a poison thunderbolt that threatened to destroy the world. From Gosainkunda we trek on to the Laurabina pass and then down into the Helambu region. For a better description of the region please go to the Helambu trekking page.
