The Ganja la pass at 5132m is a rather tricky pass to negotiate but it provides an alternative to entering the Helambu region to the other itineraries as you do not need to trek back down the Langtang Valley before crossing over to the Gosainkuda lakes. It does however mean you miss out on the lakes unless you back track. If you are planning this route it is neccessary to take all your own food and camping equipment as there is nothing on the trail for a few days. The Ganja la is not an easy pass especially in winter and ropes are often needed to negotiate a safe crossing.
The route from Kyanjin Gompa crosses the Langtang Khola below Kyanjin Gompa, the trail makes a steep climb along the ridge on the south side of the valley through a forest of rhododendron and juniper. The trail lies to the south of the forest and follows streams and moraines before climbing steeply towards the pass. The views to the north from the pass, of Langtang Lirung and the snow peaks in Tibet, including Shisha Pangma at 8013m, are outstanding. This trek needs to be done under canvas
