As the saying goes "it is not the getting to the destination that counts, it is the journey along the way."In the case of a journey to Mount Everest, it is both. A trek that can be taxing on occassions, always interesting, ever challenging and at times throws up almost too much, for the senses to take in.
Travel with and amongst some of the most famous mountain people on this planet. The harsh lives led by the Sherpa people who have lived and worked the region long before even climbing mountains for pleasure was invented, let alone trekking. The gentle power of the Buddhist faith is reflected by the many monasteries and mani walls along the way. Mountain vista's that leave the lungs asking for more, it is all here on the last earthly rung on lifes journey.
The Everest Region (Solu Khumbu Region) is the second most popular region for trekking in Nepal after The Annapurna Region. It is likely it would be the most popular if the region was easier to get to.Getting to the Khumbu (upper region) entails a fourty minute flight into the airstrip at Lukla, perhaps one of the most dramatic and exiting airstips to land and take off from anywhere in the world. The majority of trekkers choose this way as it saves over a week in trekking time.
For those wishing to truely experience the journey to the top of the world, then we recommend you take the bus (eight hours) to Jiri and start your trek in the lower reaches of the solu (lower region). The benefit of the extra week is, the trail is a lot less crowded and the scenary on way is also very different, resembling the scenary found in the alpine regions of Europe.Perhaps another reason for choosing the longer route is you are actually following Hillarys first steps on his way to conquering Everest way back in 1953.Either way you are rewarded with some fantastic panoramic views of the high mountains in and amongst some of the friendliest mountain people in the world. We will be celebrating his Diamond Jubilee in May of 2013 when we plan to be at the Base Camp on the 29th May 2013 sixty years to the day Hillary made his conquest. Please check details on this web site.
